Matthew holds a B.A. in History and Italian Literature from Columbia, an M.A. in International Relations from Yale, and an A.M. and Ph.D. in History from Harvard. He serves as a Lecturer in the Committee on Degrees in History & Literature, and is a historian of modern Europe and its place in the wider world. Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked in renewable energy policy at a Munich-based think tank and held a Bosch Foundation Transatlantic Fellowship in Berlin.
